About The After School Activity Program (ASAP)

Welcome to ASAP!
ASAP is a fun, home-like environment where school-age kids spend the hours after school while their parents are at work. Our highly-qualified staff provides daily homework support, unique enrichment activities and opportunities for free choice in safe and nurturing surroundings. Each day the children arrive with smiles on their faces ready for their after school time to be filled with activities like science experiments, Stratego or Connect Four competitions, multi-cultural art activities and kickball games, to name just a few. Parents arriving early for the 6 pm pick up often meet with resistance from their children: “Why did you come so early?”

ASAP enters its seventh year with the 2010-2011 school year. We are proud of the reputation we have established in the community, which has been built on the positive feedback from our ASAP parents and kids…they are our best PR tools! Our return rate from year to year exceeds 85% and, when our fifth graders “graduate”, they hate to leave! We are looking forward to continued growth, expanding our commitment to providing superior after school programming.

History
Family Network's After School Activity Program, or ASAP, originated at the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year in collaboration with North Shore School District 112 to meet the needs of working parents. District 112 allocated one classroom at Wayne Thomas School for ASAP's first school year. A measure of our success was increased demand for the subsequent year when a classroom was added at Indian Trail School. A second classroom was added at Wayne Thomas during the '07-'08 school year followed by a move to Oak Terrace School. ASAP has served over 70 children each year since 2008.

Additional ASAP Information

• FULL DAYS

ASAP offers full day care, 8am to 6pm, on most of the school holidays (see calendar). These days are optional and take place at Oak Terrace for our ASAP kids as well as any student attending the schools ASAP serves. Special plans and activities, a fun lunch (Buffo’s, Subway, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, etc.) and snacks, and an opportunity to meet children from the other schools make full days especially exciting.

On the full days, our kids have the opportunity to relax with their friends, play games and do art projects, play outside and in the gym…the possibilities are endless. The teachers plan activities they’re unable to fit into the normal daily schedule… treasure hunts, science experiments, and knock hockey tournaments, to name just a few.

An artist from Urban Gateways in Chicago always comes on full days to do a workshop with us and no two artists are every the same.  We have been treated to workshops from painters, sculptors, grafitti artists, actors, dancers, percussionists and poets.

Join us for the fun!  Check out photos from past full days in ASAP News below.  Bring your friends…even if they don’t usually come to ASAP. Check the calendar below and sign up for the next full day.

Meet the Staff

ASAP Director
Bobbie Hinden, M.Ed. joined Family Network in 2007 as the ASAP Director.  She received a Masters in Special Education from American University and taught children with autism until starting her own family.  During her children’s early childhood, she worked in both the retail and wholesale ends of children’s books, designed jewelry and served on boards and as a volunteer with local schools and community organizations.  She is pleased to be back in the field of education where her passion lies.

Oak Terrace

Ralph Brock, our Oak Terrace site director, has been a vital member of our ASAP staff since its establishment. He has an education background and has worked as the nature counselor at Tamarack Day Camp for over 30 years. Ralph brings a wealth of knowledge to the program; his enrichment activities are legendary, often with a focus on science or nature.

Elva Velez, one of our bilingual Oak Terrace teachers, has also been with ASAP since 2004. Elva is taking education classes toward becoming a certified teacher and works for District 112 as an Assistant Teacher at Red Oak School. Elva’s warmth and creativity are special qualities that enhance our ASAP team.

Brenda Ramirez, another one of our bilingual teachers at Oak Terrace, has her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and works for Distract 112 as an Assistant Teacher at Edgewood Middle School. In her fourth year as part of the ASAP team, Brenda is often the “go to” person for our ASAP children. She is organized and innovative, bringing new ideas to the team on a regular basis.

Betsy Colon, also a bilingual teacher at Oak Terrace, has 15 years of experience in after school programming, both as a teacher and a director. Betsy works for District 112 at the Early Childhood Center at Green Bay School. We are lucky to have Betsy as part of our ASAP team. She is resourceful and her previous knowledge of after school programs has been a major plus for ASAP.

Janine Cangialosi, joined our Oak Terrace team at the beginning of 2010.  She brings skills to ASAP that she has acquired at her TA job in the STEP program at Indian Trail.  During the summer, "J" is director of one of NSSRA’s programs.  We can always count on J to join the kids in their physical play outside and in the gym.

Indian Trail

Nancy Telling, our Indian Trail site coordinator, brings an extensive background in working with children to ASAP. Nancy has her Masters in Counseling Psychology from Trinity and her undergraduate degree from Barat College. Nancy has become a vital member of our ASAP team, bringing creativity and resourcefulness along with a nurturing and supportive manner to the Indian Trail classroom.

Hilary Johnson, a graduate of the University of Kansas, joins our Indian Trail staff with a variety of experiences working with children.  Hilary has been the camp director for the Highland Park Park District Kindersports program and her classroom experience during college and as a volunteer in Ghana has helped Hilary become a valuable asset to the staff.  Hilary is pursuing her masters degree in Early Childhood Education at National Louis University.

Katelin Schrero, in her second year with ASAP, rounds out our Indian Trail team. With an extensive background in theater and drama, Katelin shares special talents with our ASAP kids.  Katelin has also taught science and technology to pre-k through 5th graders  as well as English and drama to Israeli children. Katelin also brought a new member to our ASAP family when she delivered her first baby in November 2009!
